What Happened to Wiz Khalifa?

For the most part, Wiz Khalifa hasn’t fallen at any notable hurdle or had his career derailed. Forged from a prolific run on the mixtape circuit alongside his close confidant Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa’s infusion of poppy hooks, glossy beats and lyrics that orbit around the finer things in life made it clear that the Pittsburgh-bred artist was earmarked for the big time. After evading an ill-fated deal with Warner Bros in 2009, Wiz’s official statement on the matter spoke of how he was “happy to be moving on with all of my material and having the chance to be in control of my next moves.” And as history has taught, it was a fresh start he’d seize with both hands. On his liberation-minded sophomore album Deal Or No Deal depicted Wiz as a man that’d make it in spite of label backing if necessary but his goal to reach the game’s upper echelons was always disclosed. From “This Plane” to the “New York nights, Miami beaches and Hollywood hoes” that he’d crooned about on 2009’s Flight School, Khalifa’s status as an underground artist was always a matter of circumstance rather than a concerted effort to remain unsigned hype. By the time that 2010’s Kush And Orange Juice dropped and made him a 1# trend on Twitter in the process, Wiz’s widespread appeal was undeniable and it wouldn’t take long until the bright lights of the Billboard charts came knocking.
