For years, Michael Jackson seemed to be the punchline of Eminem’s jokes. From his legal troubles to his appearance, nothing was off limits. But in the end, it was MJ who got the last laugh. Back in 2004, Eminem took things a step further in the Just Lose It video, openly parodying Jackson in ways many felt crossed the line, sparking backlash and public frustration from Michael. He couldn’t censor the record. But he could outmaneuver him. So in 2007, through his joint venture with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Jackson helped acquire Famous Music for $370 million, a deal that included the publishing rights to many of Eminem’s biggest songs. Which meant every time Shady performed those hits, Michael got paid. Not through diss tracks. Not through interviews. Through ownership.
