Sango Says “AI Can Go to Hell,” Talks Big Sean & Frank Ocean

Sango stopped by HOT 97 to talk to Nessa about his new album Rhythm & Melody, his first album released with Nas’ Mass Appeal, and why he wanted this project to make a statement about who he is as a producer. He talked about the freedom of being a producer, chasing plaques, the pressure that comes with helping shape an artist’s music, and why he says, “AI can go to hell.” They also got into his love of history and anthropology, tracing his family tree, and how sounds from Detroit, Chicago, Brazil, Africa and beyond have influenced his music.

Sango also opened up about the story behind “Big Little Lies” with Big Sean, including its Mary J. Blige sample, the year-long process to get it cleared and the personal lyrics that made him question whether to release it. He talked about his son co-producing on the album, his wife supporting him from the beginning of his career, getting feedback from Nas, and working with Frank Ocean. Plus, Sango gives his producer picks between J Dilla, Timbaland, Kanye West, Drake & 40, The Neptunes and more. Rhythm & Melody is out now.
