Saigon started his six-year prison sentence at 17-years-old and described being locked up with adults. He started rapping in prison, often glorifying the actions that got him locked up in the first place. When one of his fellow inmates brought attention to this, Saigon said he started to add messages to his raps.

The rapper also described entering prison with a seventh-grade reading level until one of the inmates started giving him books and quizzing him on them. Saigon started to enjoy reading and read over 500 books while he was incarcerated. He also described witnessing violent stabbings and committing some himself, explaining that fear is more important than respect in prison.

After being released from prison in 1999, Saigon described the difficulty he had establishing good relationships with DJs because his street mentality. He credited DJ Kay Slay for taking the time to give him advice and host his first mixtape. He also credited DJ Vlad for helping him get a record deal by including him on his mixtapes.
