In this clip, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka detailed what it’s like managing a city budget of nearly $1 billion. While that is an exorbitant amount of money to the average person, Baraka explained how that’s not nearly enough to operate a city on the scale of Newark and their budget pales in comparison to their neighbors across the bridge in New York City.

Later, Mayor Baraka talked about the highly publicized $100M donation from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to the Newark school district. However, Baraka explained how that money didn’t end up in the classrooms of the students most in need but rather circulated to cover marketing and administrative costs in local nonprofits and charter schools.
