Mez Reveals J. Cole’s Life-Changing Text & Makes Nessa Cry

Mez stopped by HOT 97 to talk to Nessa about his debut album Electric Future Gangster and why it’s taken nearly 15 years to release his first album despite working with Dr. Dre, J. Cole and other major artists. He opened up about being stuck in a record deal that prevented him from releasing music, how that led him to direct J. Cole’s “Middle Child” video, and why he decided to drop “King” from his name. He also shared the incredible story of moving to Los Angeles without a job or place to live, getting a second chance to work with Dr. Dre, and how T.I. gave him a song for his album. Plus, he discussed working with J. Cole and Anderson .Paak, his upcoming meeting with Nas, and why he believes T.I. doesn’t get enough credit.

Mez also reflected on losing his mother at 20, dropping out of school to help his younger brother, and the special way he included his late grandmother on his album. He talked about self-doubt, the lessons he’s learned about trusting people, and what he hopes listeners take away from his music. In an emotional moment, Mez revealed how Colin Kaepernick and Know Your Rights Camp inspired him to start his own community initiative, something he had never publicly discussed before. The conversation brought Nessa to tears and led to an exciting discussion about bringing Know Your Rights Camp to Mez’s hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina.
