Man Teases His Buddhist Monk Friend

This is the hilarious moment a friend tried to tempt a Buddhist monk with whiskey – while he was undergoing abstinence

Panuwat Wasinanurak and his friend were attending the ordination ceremony of his friend Ravi, 32, who was sitting at another table drinking water with relatives.

Upon seeing the religious trainee, Panuwat raised a bottle of liquor playfully towards him and winked, jokingly offering him a glass.

Footage shows Ravi battling to keep a straight face as he tries not to laugh – or accept a drink – at the banter in Nonthaburi, Thailand, on June 7.

Panuwat said: 'I have been close friends with Ravi since middle school. I wanted to tease him with the drink because I know he can't have one, but he likes to.'

Like many Thai men, Ravi was being ordained as a monk as a rite of passage to adulthood. He will stay at the local temple for a few weeks, during which time he is prohibited from drinking, smoking or having contact with females.

The Buddhist monastic code, called the Vinaya, forbids intoxicants to help monks maintain mindfulness, moral discipline, and spiritual clarity.

Thailand embraced Theravada Buddhism centuries ago, which became deeply woven into its culture, law, and daily life. The religion's teachings promote harmony, compassion, and ethical living, which resonate with Thai society and have helped Buddhism remain the dominant faith in the country.
