In this clip, Malik Yoba spoke about seeing the script for Empire for the first time and not being that impressed by it. He said it had the elements of a hit TV series but wasn’t sure of that from the initial read. He touched on the perception that the show was pushing some sort of “gay agenda” and how he believes in the importance of representation despite how uncomfortable it makes people.
Malik also explained the backlash he received for dressing in drag for a friend’s play and how that only empowered him to push the boundaries further in order to humanize everyone’s experience.
