How Drag Makeup Changed The Beauty Industry Forever

Whether you know it or not, your favorite beauty trends are all from the drag scene. Contouring, block brows, highlighting, overlined lips, cut crease, are from decades of drag queens perfecting their techniques. Their history has been complicated, and only came into the mainstream in the last few decades. The success of RuPaul’s Drag Race made drag queens into stars. They have millions of fans online and offline. They are often sought after for music videos, events, fashion shows, movies, and television shows. However, they are not credited for their contributions to beauty.

Social media has pushed the “Instagram makeup” look forward, but it’s techniques drag queens have used for decades. On stage, queens used to highlight and contour to play with light and shadows on stage during performances. They were also used to feminize masculine bone structures. While cut crease, bold lashes, and overlined lips allowed them to express themselves through makeup, and so everyone in the audience can see their facial expressions. Some makeup brands have tapped into the community for collaborations, but some say it’s not enough. Queens have come up with their own lines and continue to come up with new tips and tricks. What will they come up with next?
