Retired FBI agent Scott Payne reveals the rare and perilous nature of undercover work. With only about 600 certified FBI undercover agents out of 12,000 total, and fewer than 50 having led five or more operations, Payne is among a select few with extensive frontline experience. Despite the grave risks, he emphatically states, “No certified FBI undercover has ever been killed.” One undercover agent died on-duty, but was not officially certified, underscoring the rigor of the FBI’s training and certification.
