In this clip, Fab 5 Freddy clarified the longstanding misconception that Jean Michel Basquiat was discovered by Andy Warhol. As Fab 5 Freddy puts it, Warhol became aware of Basquiat as he was creating a buzz in the downtown scene. Fab 5 Freddy said that the stories of Warhol being the reason for Basquiat’s ascendance is steeped in racism. He also reflected on him dying at the age of 27 and spoke about Basquiat’s battle with heroin.
Later, Fab 5 Freddy talked about his portrait hanging up in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and how his famous painter friends have all done portraits for him, most notably Keith Haring. Fab 5 Freddy went on to speak about Keith Haring’s legacy and his battle with AIDS.
