Draymond Green went on his podcast and defended Klay Thompson from a media narrative that does not actually exist — and the reason he is this fired up might be sitting in his own contract.
Here is what happened. Dallas bought out the final year of Klay Thompson’s deal, he cleared waivers, and he signed a two-year contract with a player option in Miami alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Draymond Green responded by saying the media was setting Klay up for failure, that people should stop acting like it is 2017 Klay going to Miami, and that he wished coverage framed it the way it framed Ray Allen joining the Heat in 2012.
The problem is that everyone had already made that exact comparison. Klay Thompson was asked about Ray Allen the day Miami introduced him and said he loves it, crediting Allen and Reggie Miller as the blueprint for his off-ball game. Erik Spoelstra was asked the same question and said he could see exactly where it comes from.
So why is Draymond this upset? Golden State was reportedly open to a Klay Thompson reunion. Then Draymond re-signed on a one-year, $27.7 million deal that pushed the Warriors past the first apron of $209,015,000. Under the current CBA, a team above the first apron cannot sign a bought-out player whose previous salary exceeded the non-taxpayer mid-level exception of $15,044,000. Klay Thompson was earning $17.5 million. The reunion was not a decision. It was arithmetic.
