DMX: The Original NBA YoungBoy

In every walk of life, we are drawn to individuals with depth and duality. As opposed to being an open book, those people who are shrouded in mystery will always garner more intrigue from audiences than those who can be easily comprehended. Likewise, an artist who is contending with a storm inside themselves is always going to be more compelling to chart than someone whose life is a straight line. In hip-hop, the audience’s appetite for these troubled figures knows no bounds. Over the years, the genre has platformed countless artists who carry the wounds of their past in every step or syllable, making their career fascinating to witness for two reasons. Not only do they use their life experience as the clay that they then mold into incredible art, but there is also intrigue in watching how they navigate the world of fame and fortune that their music has afforded them.

Born 29 years and numerous musical movements apart, DMX and NBA Youngboy are two artists who have walked that tightrope to such a degree that they can be seen as one another’s parallel in separate eras. But what is it exactly that makes X and Youngboy exude similar energy and, perhaps more importantly, what can Youngboy learn from the more tragic components of the late Earl Simmons’ journey through both the industry and life itself?
