Former assistant US Attorney Dan Dorsey and former FBI agent Mike Campi, authors of the forthcoming book ‘The War Against the Mafia’, gave an interview in which they discussed RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) law and its impact on organized crime. According to Dorsey and Campi, RICO permits the prosecution of disconnected crimes as long as they were committed within five years of each other as part of a criminal enterprise. This enabled law enforcement to target the Mafia’s hierarchy and prove a pattern of criminal activity. Additionally, the pair criticised the claims made by politicians, like former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, that the Mafia did not exist; Dorsey called such denial “absurd” given the wealth of evidence indicating the Mafia’s influence and activities, both then and now.
