In this VladTV interview, John Hinckley Jr. discusses the events leading up to the March 30, 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Hinckley recalls first focusing on Jimmy Carter during the 1980 campaign, getting close to him in Dayton, Ohio, and later being arrested at National Airport with three guns while trying to travel to Nashville. After Carter lost the election, Hinckley says his attention shifted to Reagan, influenced by his fixation on actress Jodie Foster.

He details selling two firearms in Denver, keeping a .22 handgun, traveling by bus from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and checking into a hotel on March 29. The next morning, he saw Reagan’s schedule in the newspaper, learned the president would be at the Washington Hilton, and wrote a final letter to Foster shortly before the shooting.
