This piece of plastic from the Mattel company has been around to entertain children, and sometimes adults, for decades with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. But did you know that her real name is Barbara Milicent Roberts? She was named after her creator, Ruth Handler’s daughter, but her fictional inspiration was a lot less family friendly! We’ll also talk about her counterpart, the Ken doll, named after Kenneth Handler. A woman named Bettina Dorman boasts the world’s largest collection of these toys, while famous artist Andy Warhol once immortalized one in a painting. We’ll talk about her past as a fashion model and reveal some of the strange and downright controversial dolls we’ve seen over the years.
